Bengali Style roasted lentils Dal Bhaja Recipe/Roasted dal tadka. Tasty dal bhaat, have a bite!
Ingredients
1 cup Moong Dal
Salt to taste
1/4 tsp Turmeric
2 tbsp mustard oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
2 dry red-chilies
1 bay leaf
2 slit green chilies
1/2 cup grated coconut
1/2 cup chopped coriander leaves
1 tsp ghee
Method
1. Heat a Kadai /any utensil with thick bottom.Dry roast till golden brown, by doing this you will start getting a nice aroma from the dal. Transfer the roasted lentil in a metal bowl.Carefully add cold water and wash it thoroughly.Discard the murky water 2-3 times.
2.Take the washed dal and add 2 cups fresh water.Also add salt to taste,1/4 tsp Turmeric stir well, cover and cook.Check for water in between.Add water if required.Cook till the dal is done.Can pressure cook for 1-2 whistles.
But if cooked in a vessel it wont be mushy.Add 2 slit green chilies.Stir well.Add water in batches cover and cook for few more minutes.
3.For the tempering heat 2 tbsp of mustard oil and add 1 tsp cumin seeds,2 red chilies fry for few seconds.Add 1 bay leaf.To this add fresh grated coconut.Cook till light brown, roast everything in low flame.
This coconut adds a nutty flavor to the dal.
4.Add this prepared coconut tadka to the cooked dal and mix well. Dal is cooked to medium thick consistency.Add coriander leaves and ghee before serving.
